Labour candidate John Caldwell has won the Elderslie by-election. He has won his place alongside Renfrewshire Councils other councillors.

Cllr John Caldwell holds the seat with a majority of 65 down from the last election on 1st May 2003 where the majoroty then was 654 under the late Jean Goldie.

The win is Labour’s first north of the border for nearly a year. Elderslie falls under Paisley and Renfrewshire South constituency that is held by Douglas Alexander.

Lab 608, SNP 543, Con 198, Lib Dem 159, Scottish Socialist Party 50. (May 2003 – Lab 1060, SNP 406, C 184, Lib Dem 150). Lab hold. Swing 16.1% Lab to SNP.
