Local MP Gavin Newlands has written to Prime Minister David Cameron to urge him to take immediate action on the refugee humanitarian crisis.
The MP also sent the Prime Minister a photo of him holding a sign that reads #RefugeesWelcome.
In the letter Mr Newlands writes “Like yourself, I am a father first and a politician second. The scenes that we’re seeing on our TV screens and in our newspapers are utterly heart-wrenching – and I call on you to accept your ‘moral responsibility’ and do something to help those affected.
“The SNP have long been critics of the asylum and immigration policies that have been pursued by successive UK Governments.
“As you will be aware the SNP group at Westminster have long been critical of the approach that your own government has taken towards asylum seekers and refugees.
“However, this humanitarian crisis is a touch-stone issue that should unite all political parties, and is the time for our political leaders to act decisively to help those in need.
“I call on you to abandon your entrenched position which solely aims to appease the right-wing of your own party and UKIP sympathisers.
“Future generations will judge us on how we respond to this escalating crisis, and I call on you to act decisively to help those in their hour of need.”
