Renfrewhsire’s two MPs Mhairi Black and Gavin Newlands have confirmed they will be standing for re-election.
Today Prime Minister Theresa May announced plans to call general election on 8th June.
Mhairi Black, MP for Paisley and Renfrewshire South announced the news this morning she will run again, she said: “I will be seeking re-election on the 8th of June.
“The SNP have been the only effective opposition to the Tories in Westminster since the last election.
“The people of Paisley and Renfrewshire South put their trust in me just two years ago and it is crucial that we return as many SNP MP’s as possible to keep providing that strong voice for Renfrewshire and Scotland.
“If the Prime Minister is looking for a fight, that is exactly what she will get.”
Gavin Newlands, MP for Paisley and Renfrewshire North confirmed this afternoon via Facebook.
He said: “Less than a month later Theresa May announces that she was just kidding on and that there IS going to be an election. Now is now the time apparently.
“With this announcement, Theresa May has once again put the interests of the Tories ahead of those of the country.
“The weak opposition of the Labour party has provided Theresa May with the opportunity to call an early general election as a means of strengthening her majority.
“This election will once again be about who best stands up for Scotland, and in the face of the Tories increasing their mandate in England, it’s never been more important for Scotland and Renfrewshire to reject the Tories and their right-wing, divisive politics.
“Since 2015, I have strived to be a hardworking, local MP who always stands up for Renfrewshire. Being the MP for Paisley and Renfrewshire North has been the honour of my life.
“Therefore, let there be no doubt, I will seek re-election to represent Paisley and Renfrewshire North and over the coming weeks will continue to work hard to retain the trust of local people.”
