University of the West of Scotland (UWS) officially launched its new Coat of Arms at an event at its Paisley Campus on Wednesday.
The new Coat of Arms was devised by The Lord Lyon of Scotland – the heraldic authority for Scotland – drawing on references from the arms of the former institutions that comprise UWS – University of Paisley; Craigie College, Ayr; and Bell College, Hamilton – together with new elements representing the University’s presence in Dumfries and the University’s wider UK and international outlook.
The UWS motto which sits below the arms is Doctrina Prosperitas, which may be translated as ‘learning is success’ or ‘success comes through learning’.
The launch event saw Dr Joseph Morrow QC, Lord Lyon King of Arms, officially present the new Coat of Arms to The Rt Hon Dame Elish Angiolini DBE QC, Chancellor of UWS.
Professor Craig Mahoney, Principal and Vice-Chancellor, said: “We are delighted to have officially launched our new Coat of Arms which brilliantly reflects the origins of UWS as well as representing our work internationally. Everyone is delighted with the design and how it has incorporated all elements of UWS’ past, present and future. We look forward to seeing the new Coat of Arms in use, particularly at graduations in the summer.”
