Flags at Renfrewshire Council Headquarters are being flown at half mast as mark of respect to the people of Barcelona.

Thirteen people died in Spain when a van was driven into crowds on Las Ramblas, a busy street in Barcelona on Thursday and hours later a woman died when a car was driven into pedestrians in Cambrils, near the tourist town Salou.

Renfrewshire’s Provost Lorraine Cameron said: “This is a horrific incident which has no place in our society and my heartfelt sympathies go out to all those who have been affected.

“We stand together with the people of Barcelona and our thoughts are with them at this harrowing time.

“I will be writing to the Mayor of Barcelona on behalf of Renfrewshire to offer our sincere condolences.”
