Police are investigating a fire in a common close after a bin was purposely set alight and a woman was hospitalised.

The incident happened on Friday night at around 9.05pm. Police and the fire service attended a report of fire within a close in Thrushcraig Crescent, Paisley. The fire was extinguished and it was discovered that a wheelie bin had been deliberately set on fire.

The fire caused extensive damage throughout the close and a 40-year-old woman was taken to the Royal Alexandra Hospital for assessment. She was later released from hospital.

Detective Constable Jane Perratt at Paisley CID, said: “It is vital that we catch the person or persons responsible for this stupid and cowardly act as they may do something like this again resulting in serious injuries or even fatalities.

“I urge anyone who has any information that could assist our inquiry to get in touch with police immediately. I am especially keen to speak to a group of 5 males and females that were heard in the street just prior to the fire being discovered in the close.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact Paisley police station via 101 quoting incident number 3771 of  Friday 1st December 2017. Alternatively, calls can be made to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 where anonymity can be maintained.
