A football fan with learning difficulties has been attacked as he left a football match at St Mirren on Saturday.

The 19-year-old was allegedly attacked at around 5pm on Saturday after he became separated from a family member as he exited the grounds.

Police said he was punched and kicked and his St Mirren’s supporters scarf removed from his neck.

Local Community Policing Inspector Tracy Harkins said: “This was a despicable act carried out on a vulnerable member of the community, thankfully the young man only received minor injuries, however, he has been left extremely traumatised by the event.

“Local officers are carrying out extensive enquires and I’m extremely hopeful that other supporters who may have witnessed the incident come forward with information. I’d like to ask anyone who may have seen the incident to contact Police Scotland on 101 or via crime stoppers on 0800 555 111.”
