Seven years since his election Derek Mackay has this week dealt with his 10,000th constituent case as MSP for Renfrewshire North & West.
Marking the milestone, Mr Mackay has taken to the local community, by hosting a number of door to door street surgeries across his constituency.
The SNP MSP has spent the week with local Councillors, knocking on resident’s doors in Bishopton, Erskine, Gallowhill and Renfrew listening to any concerns residents may have and issues they require assistance with.
To help residents bring issues to his attention, Mackay, who also serves as Finance Secretary in the Scottish Government, holds regular constituency wide surgeries, as well as a telephone call line every Monday morning. Since 2011 he has hosted 600 surgeries.
Commenting, Mr Mackay said: “Constituent casework is the most direct way an MSP can serve their constituents and is my number one priority in my role as a constituency MSP. While it is a little disappointing that so many people are experiencing problems on a daily basis, I am very pleased that so many constituents have taken advantage of my office and surgeries to raise these issues, or to seek advice.
“These issues can range from local environmental issues to more sensitive cases, such as people being made homeless. Environmental issues, such as bin collections, vegetation, street cleaning, and housing have been the main problems constituents have brought to my attention over the years – accounting for over one third of my cases.
“Taking to the doors this week has been an additional way for me to engage with constituents and listen to any concerns they may have. I will be continuing this type of street surgery programme in the coming months, working with local Councillors on issues raised with us.
“I encourage anyone who has an issue they need help with to contact me by telephone or e-mail, go to one of my regular surgeries or pop into my office where, if I am not available, one of my staff will be able to assist you on my behalf.”
