Scottish Olympian Mark Bennett has officially opened the new Aldi Johnstone store this morning while donning his silver medal.

The Rugby legend welcomed the first 30 customers with the help of pupils from St Margaret’s Primary School and Store Manager, Sandy McKelvie, to a complimentary bag full of fresh fruit and vegetables from Aldi’s Super 6 range.

Following the opening, Mark Bennett visited St Margaret’s Primary School and gave an inspiring assembly, sharing his training regime behind becoming an Olympic silver medallist. He also explained the importance healthy eating and exercising had on his success, hoping to motivate the next generation of children to eat well and keep moving.

This comes as part of Aldi’s ‘Get Set to Eat Fresh’ initiative, which encourages children aged 5-14 to develop their understanding and love of fresh, healthy food.

Speaking after the opening, Team GB star, Mark, said: “It has been such a great day – what a way to thank Aldi for its support of Team GB and to be able to give back to communities. It was a pleasure to meet everyone who came along to the opening.”

Committed to bringing shoppers high quality, local produce, the new 1172 sqm Johnstone store stocks over 400 Scottish products from over 80 suppliers across Scotland.

Customers can shop some of the finest food and drink Scotland has to offer, from Aldi’s award-winning Specially Selected Orkney Caramel Shortbread to its fresh core range of Scottish meat and fish, all chosen for its exceptional taste, value and provenance.

Store Manager, Sandy McKelvie, said: “We’d like to thank everyone who has played a part of making today a success. Having Mark join us has really made today a special event. It was great to meet some of our new customers and we look forward to meeting many more in the coming weeks and months.”

The store will boost the local economy with 30 new jobs created with the launch of the Johnstone store.
