Local Councillor Mags MacLaren is highlighting a community grant scheme which uses money raised supermarket carrier bag charges to fund community projects.

Tesco Bags of Help Centenary Grants are now open for not for profit organisations to apply for £25,000 for projects that bring significant benefit to communities.

The Centenary Grants are two special voting rounds of the Tesco Bags of Help local community grant scheme and offer a unique opportunity to help more people across five regional areas in Scotland. Voting for these grants will take place in July/August and November/December 2019.

Following the vote, the project that receives the most votes in the voting region will receive a grant of up to £25,000, second place receiving up to £15,000 and third place up to £10,000.

The July/august 2019 voting period will feature projects with a Health and Wellbeing theme, and projects focussing on cancer, heart disease and diabetes will be prioritised.

Councillor Mags MacLaren, SNP Paisley North West, said: “This could be an ideal opportunity for some local groups to raise much needed funds.

“I would encourage all local groups to go online to see if they can benefit from this funding.

“It is good to see the charge on carrier bags not only helping the environment but also helping to fund local community groups.”

Organisations can still apply at any time to the Tesco Bags of Help community grant fund. Up to £4000 is available to support a wide range of projects that benefit your local community. Up to December 2018 in Scotland, the scheme has supported over 2800 community projects with more than £8.5 million awarded in grants.

Every 2 months Tesco award 225 projects a share of over £250,000. For find out more or to apply to Bags of Help, visit http://bit.ly/bagsofhelp4.
