Gavin Newlands SNP MP joined with his colleague Patrick Grady MP and constituents to call on the UK Government to take decisive political action to tackle climate change and bring about justice for the world’s poorest people.

The SNP is renewing its efforts to make Scotland a world-leader on climate change after First Minister Nicola Sturgeon declared a ‘Climate Emergency’. Since the announcement the SNP Scottish Government has unveiled a whole range of new proposals and initiatives to protect our environment.

In May 2019 it was announced that Scotland will stop contributing to climate change within a generation. In addition to a net-zero target for 2045, Scotland will reduce emissions by 70% by 2030 and 90% by 2040, the most ambitious statutory targets in the world for these years.

Gavin Newlands SNP MP said: “Climate change is a global issue that demands collaborative action, the Scottish Government has declared a climate emergency and put in place ambitious targets to tackle the issue, the UK Government must follow that example. I was also heartened to see that Renfrewshire has become the sixth Local Authority in Scotland to declare a climate emergency and are in the process of setting up a working group on how best to tackle the issue at a local level.”
