Renfrewshire’s two MPs Mhairi Black and Gavin Newlands have welcomed the Supreme Court ruling this morning that Prime Minister Johnson had illegally shut down Parliament.

The court said it was wrong to stop MPs carrying out duties in the run-up to Brexit on Thursday 31st October.

Black, MP for Paisley and Renfrewshire South has called for Johnson to ‘resign’ as Prime Minister with Newlands stating ‘it’s time he left Downing Street for good and do it now’.

MPs are expecting to return to Westminster tomorrow.

The Prime Minister closed parliament for five weeks earlier this month in a move which it is believed was designed to stop Members of Parliament from blocking Brexit with or without a deal.

Experts have been warning for months that a no deal Brexit will be devastating for jobs, services, food and medicine supplies.

The Prime Minister insisted the suspension was designed purely to allow time to put together a new programme for government. However, the court upheld the earlier verdict of the Scottish Court of Session that Johnson’s decision to close down parliament was a deliberate attempt to stop the work of MPs.

Mhairi Black MP for Paisley and Renfrewshire South, said: “Boris Johnson has acted outside of the law and should resign immediately. He has behaved no less than a dictator by shutting down Parliament at a time of such uncertainty for people.

“People are clearly feeling worried about the actions of these Brexit obsessed Tories and I want to be completely clear that the SNP and I are completely against Brexit and the no deal scenario we are crashing towards.

“The courts have ruled that the shutting down of the UK Parliament was illegal and Boris has misled the Queen, the Parliament and the people. Paisley and Renfrewshire South didn’t vote for Brexit so let’s get back to work and sort out this complete mess.”

Gavin Newlands, MP for Paisley and Renfrewshire North, said: “The judgement this morning makes clear that the UK Prime Minister’s action went beyond the law and were anti-democratic.

“That is a damning indictment on his reign and on his party.  They have taken Scotland and the rest of these isles to brink of a catastrophic no deal Brexit, and now their attempts to strangle democracy have been exposed as the action of a tinpot dictator.

“Tomorrow morning I’ll be in the House of Commons alongside my colleagues holding this discredited and decrepit Government to account.  Boris Johnson has not a shred of dignity left – it’s time he left Downing Street for good and do it now.”
