The MSP for Renfrewshire North and West, Derek Mackay has resigned his ministerial post with immediate effect this morning following allegations he sent inappropriate texts to a 16-year-old boy.
Mr Mackay was supposed to present the Scottish government’s budget at Holyrood later today.
He has also been suspended from the SNP while further investigations are carried out.
The Scottish Sun newspaper claims that Mr Mackay befriended the 16-year-old on Facebook and Instagram and sent him at least 270 messages.
In a statement Derek Mackay, a father-of-two, said: “I take full responsibility for my actions. I have behaved foolishly and I am truly sorry.
“I apologise unreservedly to the individual involved and his family.
“I spoke last night to the First Minister and tendered my resignation with immediate effect.
“Serving in government has been a huge privilege and I am sorry to have let colleagues and supporters down.”
First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said his conduct “failed to meet the standards required”.
