Residents at Erskine Home in Bishopton have celebrated VE Day with a tea party with music, singing and other reminiscence activities whilst observing the social distancing guidelines.

To help boost morale at this challenging time and to bring a smile to as many veterans’ faces as possible, ABF The Soldiers’ Charity has been helping the VE Day tea parties look the part with a donation of VE day partyware.

Staff have worked hard to make sure this very special day is celebrated in style by decorating the home with bunting and room decorations as well as serving VE Day-themed tea and cake.

Army Veteran Jim, now 91, remembers his VE Day party in 1945 very clearly: “The streets were decorated from side to side with flags, tressle tables and everyone had brought out table cloths and food for the street party. We obviously still had food rationing so the food was a bit different to it would have been today but I will never forget the cake made with banana essence”.

Bridgadier (Ret’d) Robin Bacon, Chief of Staff at ABF The Soldiers’ Charity, said: “The coronavirus might have made it a little harder to commemorate VE Day this year, but ABF The Soldiers’ Charity has been delighted to partner with Erskine to ensure that our elderly veterans can enjoy a celebration. We want to do our bit to boost morale at this trying time and to help bring a smile to as many veterans’ faces as possible on VE Day. On 8th May, we will remember the loss of so many who fought for our freedom while also paying tribute to those who serve today.”
