It wasn’t a traditional doon the water holiday trip for Paisley & District members. Instead, a bus load of heritage fans enjoyed a sunny visit to Doonfoot in Ayrshire.
Local author James ‘Jim’ Thomson, an honorary president of the Robert Burns World Federation, gave the u3a group a free walking tour round several landmarks mentioned in the ‘Tam o’ Shanter’ epic poem. After lunch and a look round the Robert Burns Birthplace Museum nearby, members did visit the seaside. The day out ended with an ice cream and a walk along the Auld Longest Mile at Ayr beach.
u3a chair, Kathy O’Donnell, said: “Just before the pandemic started, we were fortunate to have Jim Thomson as a guest speaker. He kindly offered to take our members on a guided tour of famous sites mentioned in this poem. So once Covid regulations were lifted, we arranged this Burns experience for Paisley & District u3a members. We’ve had a fantastic time learning about our national bard, and it’s fun to be together again!
“From October we plan to restart our monthly meetings, hopefully at the Salvation Army Halls in Paisley. We are also offering everyone a free membership till 31 December 2021. So here’s the chance to try any of our activities and see for yourself how good a u3a is.”
