ACCORD Hospice in Paisley has received glowing feedback following its latest inspection by Healthcare Improvement Scotland.
During the unannounced inspection at the Renfrewshire facility, inspectors assessed a number of quality indicators – with the hospice securing an ‘Exceptional’ rating in two of the three key areas.
As well as achieving maximum ratings on ‘people’s experience of care and the involvement of carers and families’, Healthcare Improvement Scotland’s inspection also recognised the strength of ACCORD’s ‘leadership of improvement and change’.
Feedback from the inspectors recognised the person-centred approach taken in addressing care needs and the ongoing two-way communication to ascertain patients’ needs, as well as praising the ‘excellent leadership and assurance structure’ and ‘innovative processes in place’.
The outstanding assessment follows a challenging 18 months for the charity and healthcare sector as a whole, which saw ACCORD Hospice adapt to provide virtual outpatient services as well as changing its traditional services to suit the needs of patients and the community.
It also follows a commitment from the hospice to further develop its community-orientated services, bolstered by a £200,000 grant from the National Lottery Community Fund, including recruitment of additional staff members to boost its community team.
Jacki Smart, Chief Executive of ACCORD, said: “We know that our staff and volunteers strive to deliver outstanding care every single day, but to have this acknowledged by Healthcare Improvement Scotland as exceptional is truly wonderful and very welcome as the circumstances surrounding the pandemic continue to challenge everyone.
“Our teams have not only maintained the quality that ACCORD is renowned for but have also stepped up throughout the pandemic to be flexible, add new services in support of the community and flex others to remain available to those who need them. The recognition of this hard work, compassion and unwavering commitment is a real boost to us all.
“On behalf of our Senior Management Team and Board of Trustees, I would like to say a massive thank you and congratulations to each and every member of our ACCORD family, who make it possible for us to do all that we do for the people we serve. We are only exceptional because all of you are exceptional, so whether you give your time, skills or money – thank you.”
Brian Hunter, Clinical Services Manager at ACCORD reiterated this praise, saying: “This is truly an amazing achievement for the staff and the organisation during such unprecedented times. All our staff have gone above and beyond, stepping way outside their comfort zones and recognised roles to meet the needs of our patients and the community we serve.
“The staff should be very proud of what they have achieved in the last 18 months, as is our Board of Trustees and Senior Management Team. Thanks must also go to our three inspectors who were not only thorough but very communicative and approachable, making the interaction and experience of the visit for our staff very rewarding.”
