A temporary scaled-back Scotrail timetable has come into force across Scotland which affects trains in Renfrewshire as a dispute over driver shortages and pay continues.

Scotland currently have a train driver shortage and drivers are refusing to work overtime or drive trains on rest days. Scotrail are blaming the COVID-19 pandemic as the reason they are behind with training new train drivers.

Drivers’ union Aslef has argued a 2.2% pay rise is not acceptable at a time of soaring inflation, however, employment minister Richard Lochhead urged pay claims to be sensible.

ScotRail’s service delivery director David Simpson told BBC Scotland yesterday that 130 new drivers currently going through the training programme.

In Renfrewshire, you are advised to check for cancelations before you travel. Last trains going through Paisley Gilmour Street, Bishopton, Langbank, Johnstone, Milliken Park, Howwood and Lochwinnoch have changed for at least three week:

  • Glasgow to Ayr via Paisley Gilmour Street, Johnstone, Milliken Park ,Howwood and Lochwinnoch – last train to leave Glasgow will be 10pm instead of 12.15am (see timetable)
  • Glasgow to Gourock via Paisley Gilmour Street, Paisley St. James, Bishopton and Langbank  – last train to leave Glasgow will be 10.06pm (see timetable)
  • Trains to Paisley Canal are unaffected however because of staff shortages check with Scotrail before you travel. Renfrewshire News has reported in the past that trains for service are regularly cancelled without warning.

Scotrail said: “Due to driver shortages, our temporary timetable begins today. This timetable will provide greater certainty and reliability for those travelling.”.

Across Scotland, there were 2,150 weekday services, but from today this will be reduced by a third to 1,456. Yesterday 300 services were cancelled nationwide.

Scotrail claim scaling back the number of services with their new temporary timetable will reduce the need for cancellations.
