A Liberal Democrat campaigner has called on Labour MPs representing Renfrewshire constituencies to withdraw their support for Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and back a leadership contest.
Grant Toghill made the call following growing unrest within Labour after the party’s poor results in last week’s local and devolved elections.
Dozens of Labour MPs are now reportedly calling for Sir Keir Starmer to resign or set out a timetable for his departure.
None of the Labour MPs covering Renfrewshire have publicly joined those calls.
Alison Taylor previously posted a message backing the Prime Minister on social media.
She wrote: “It’s wrong not to back the Leader. Just wrong. This is not the way to go about such matters. Keir needs supported by his team. Not have the knives turned on him.”
She added that Sir Keir Starmer “was elected on a five-year mandate to change, protect, defend, enrich our United Kingdom”.
No public statements calling for his resignation or a timetable for his departure have been made by Johanna Baxter or Martin McCluskey.

Mr Toghill said families across Renfrewshire were struggling with the cost of living while Labour politicians were “fighting amongst themselves”.
He said: “The cost of living crisis is causing hell for families across our community in Renfrewshire, but this Labour Government is just navel-gazing.
“Enough is enough. Residents in Renfrewshire deserve so much better than this. They made their voices clear at the ballot box last week across Scotland.
“While families struggle to pay their bills and wait months for basic healthcare, the Prime Minister’s party is entirely focused on its own survival. We are seeing ministers now coming out and resigning from the government.
“All of Renfrewshire’s three Labour MPs must have the courage like their Scottish Labour Leader Anas Sarwar to say Starmer must go so the Government can refocus on delivering change and better services for this country.”
