Paisley councillor Mags MacLaren is highlighting the importance of voter registration.
Renfrewshire Valuation Joint Board (RVJB), the body responsible for the upkeep of the electoral roll for Renfrewshire, East Renfrewshire and Inverclyde routinely carry out door to door canvassing to households that have not returned their electoral registration forms.
This canvassing is due to start in mid-February and it’s anticipated that around 6,500 properties will be visited.
It is important to regularly update the Absent Voters List. This is a list of people who are entitled to vote by post or by proxy. Electors must provide “Personal Identifiers” (signature and date of birth) along with their application and this has to be updated regularly. If such information is not updated within 5 years then voters could lose their absent voting option (postal or proxy vote). Around 2.200 voters will be contacted this month to ensure that they supply the relevant information.
Councillor Mags MacLaren, SNP – Paisley Northwest, said: “During the chaos of Brexit no one is sure if there will be an early UK General Election, so it’s important everyone is on the electoral roll”
“If you want a say in how your country is run you need to be on the electoral roll.
“Too many people have fought for years to ensure we have the universal right to vote and all we have to do is simply complete a form.”
