THE STRANGLERS: BACK ON THE TRACKS TOUR
The Glasgow O2 Academy is no stranger to the legendary and highly successful punk band the Stranglers. The show sold out long before the band hit the stage and when they did it was to a wall of noise from their many fans that spanned all age groups. They say there are no coincidences though when I arrived while listening to random punk on my MP3 player. The Stranglers song “Tank” came on just as I reached the O2, only for the band to kick off their set with the same song.
Unlike other punk bands of their era, the Stranglers have been blessed with many top ten UK hits while their music has appeared on many TV shows and advertisements, proving how likeable this band really are and why they‘ve been able to sustain this success over 40 years.
The bands 2019 “Back On The Tracks Tour” showcased a mix old and new music that had their army of loyal fans singing along like troupers to every track throughout the night. Tracks that span four decades and taken from their many albums, like their latest Feline Double Vinyl LP, sounded just amazing when hearing them play live.
Though, the original singer and guitarist Huge Cornwell no longer fronts this amazing band. Baz Warne now on guitar and vocals gave a great performance as Dave Greenfield distinctive keyboard sound mesmerised the fans, though he was hidden by his keyboards and made it impossible to shoot him from below the stage. Plus the drummer Jet Black had been replaced with Jim Macaulay who held the band together with his sold drumming throughout the bands set. As for Jean-Jacques Burnel and his legendary bass sound no Stranglers fan could ever forget. He slunk about the stage with his bass slung low while smiling throughout in what was a great performance from a great bass player and joy to shoot.
Though when the band came back on for their two song encore, Burnel bashed his bass with the palm of his hand creating a low bass rumbling before playing the bass intro riff to, “No More Hero’s”. Thise caused the band laughing along with him as he appeared to f### up the intro riff in what was his only mistake. Saying that if this band messed up every song they’d still be a band well worth seeing as the gig was amazing from start to finish.
Like the many bands I’ve shot this was over way too fast, but like they say, time flies when you’re having fun. And while the band that’ll finish out their UK dates at the end of March before heading for the USA & Europe to continue their tour. Those in Nottingham on the 11th of March will be the next in line to see and marvel at this awesome band at “Rock City” and well named for this classy band.
