PAUL MCCARTNEY SSE HYDRO SHOW

Being an old punk I thought the last gig I would be shooting before the end of 2018 would have been The Angelic Upstarts at Paisley’s Bungalow bar till it was unexpectedly cancelled. Then arrived the email of a lifetime when Paul McCartney’s people gave Renfrewshire news the thumbs up to shoot McCartney’s ‘FRESHEN UP’ TOUR at the Glasgow SSE Hydro to which many had waited years for his return.
An old friend of mine and one time Fire Exit guitarist Paul Thompson said. “McCartney’s shows are second to none and when I saw him at Hampden, it was the best gig I’d ever seen”
With this high parse for a legend of rock whose name spans the globe and where few would find difficulty in naming one of his many songs. I was at nerves end as I waited for the show to begin beside the mixing desk around 100 meters away from the stage. Where I and the other photographers would only have the time it took McCartney to sing two songs before leaving to allow the band to get on with the show. More so we were right behind a row of seats and when he came on stage, everyone one stood up forcing us to shoot through a wave of arms and mobile phones.
McCartney announced the live UK dates back in July where he’d be kicking off at Liverpool‘s Echo Arena on December 12th, followed by the Glasgow’s SSE Hydro in Scotland, which I was lucky to shoot. Before heading back down to London’s O2 Arena, where he’ll be on stage on December 16th to entertain the many fans who‘ve lovingly followed this idol career their entire life’s.
The SSE Hydro on Clyde is truly an impressive purposes built Scottish music venue with the ability of holding 12,000 all seated or 13,000 seated and standing. Though this large capacity building give the 76-year-old Beatles legend no problems in filling since the show had sold out in seconds after the tickets went on sale. Only for the ticket touts to minutes later caused a stink when they tried to resell them up to ten times their original value, sending fans into a rage.
But rage soon lost out to uncontrolled fits of joy when McCartney took to the stage as the fans went wild for their hero, now performing on the very grounds their ancestors once toiled in the long gone Clyde ship yards. And where now a new generation of people were living the life’s so many before them could only dream about, and I was one of them.
SHOOTING A ROCK STAR
I’ve never been lucky enough to have seen the Beatles let Paul McCartney and to see him on stage large as life was quite impressive. Though I just wished I could have shot the gig the way I love to shoot bands and that was to freely move around capturing the fans, the brilliant colours and being able to get close to the artists on stage
Though now I struggled with the fans waling arms in front of me as I tried to get one decent shot. This while holding my camera up on my mono pod over their heads, while watching the LCD viewer hoping to hit focus. Then no sooner hand McCartney come on stage, all the photographers were ushered out off the press area and lead away from the event.
LEGANDS OF ROCK NEVER LOOSE IT
It’s safe to say a man in his 70s who can pull in massive crowd’s worldwide many times over. Still has what it takes to be a legend of rock whose never lost it over the decades he‘s been around in music.
Yes we all get older and look allot different from the days of our youths rendering some people to double take and wonder, Is that really him?. But our true character and what we stand for lives on in the things we do and how we change the life’s of those around us, and McCartney embodies that. For no sooner did he open his mouth you heard right away without looking this was McCartney here in Glasgow and time stood still for us all in that instance.
Though for some it was all over way too quickly, much like my quick exit from the private hire taxi back to Paisley when I was told it would cost a massive £28 to travel 7 miles, where the train only cost £3.60.
So instead of ending on that sour note I glad to say I just heard the Angelic Upstarts will after all be playing at the Paisley Bungalow on the 22nd. Nice one!
