Police Scotland have issued a warning of scam telephone calls being made to elderly residents in Renfrewshire.
Over the past week officers at Paisley have been made aware of a scam consists of a phone call being made to the home address of the victim.
The caller states that he or she is from one of a major bank and tells the resident that the bank is investigating internal thefts and that the victims account has been compromised. The suspect then requires the victim to attend their bank and withdraw large sums of money from their account.
A short while later someone turns up at the residents home pretending to be from the bank to collect the money for safe keeping.
Inspector Tracy Harkins, said: “This type of crime is just another means of bogus callers obtaining funds from the most vulnerable members of our community. Some elderly residents are not up to speed with technology and hold bank officials in high esteem, and therefore trust the caller.
“I would like to ask all members of the community to speak with their elderly relatives or neighbours and inform them of this scam, under no circumstances would a bank or building society make requests such as this.
