The University of the West of Scotland (UWS) has announced Miller Homes as the preferred bidder for its Thornly Park site in Paisley.

Subject to planning consent, the site, which consists of former student accommodation and a small number of UWS sport and fitness facilities, will be used by Miller Homes to build high-quality three to five-bedroom family homes for the area.

Use of the Thornly Park Campus has been significantly reduced in the period since the transfer of student accommodation into Paisley in 2014. The gym facility on the site has also been replaced with a new gym, open to the local community as well as students and staff, at the University’s Paisley Campus.

The 28-acre plot forms part of the Paisley South Expansion Area within Renfrewshire Council’s adopted local development plan, an allocation that is continued into the proposed replacement Renfrewshire local development plan. This allocation aims to deliver opportunities for new housing within the wider Paisley area.

Following the submission of a Proposal of Application Notice (PAN) to Renfrewshire Council, a 12-week public consultation for proposed plans has now commenced to enable community engagement with Miller Homes ahead of a formal planning application being submitted in September. A consultation event, open to all members of the public and interested parties, will be held on 21 August at the sports hall on the Thornly Park site from 1pm until 7pm.

Donna Vallance, Director of Estates at UWS, said: “We are pleased to be progressing with the sale of the site and have already started the migration of sporting activity closer to our Paisley Campus to offer more seamless services to our students.”

Paul Macari, Land Director at Miller Homes, said: “We are delighted to have been selected as preferred bidder for the University of the West of Scotland’s Thornly Park site. Under our proposals we aim to transform the site into a thriving new community by providing much needed new family homes for the area and we look forward to working with the local community and key stakeholders as we develop our plans.”

Miller Homes is eager to engage with the Thornly Park community throughout the process to ensure the new development meets local needs and requirements.

William Scarlett at Scarlett Land and Development which undertook marketing of the site jointly with Ray Dunn of R.J Dunn Property Consultancy, added:

“Following a thorough and comprehensive process on behalf of The University of the West of Scotland, and working closely with the consultancy team including the planning team at Felsham PD, we are delighted the site is now under offer to Miller Homes. Both Scarlett Land and Development and R.J Dunn look forward to working closely with Miller Homes to bring the sale to conclusion.”
