Ferguson Marine is recruiting up to 15 new apprentices to make up its 2024 cohort.

The shipyard in neighbouring Port Glasgow in Inverclyde is seeking candidates for fabricator and welder roles beginning in August this year.

Apprentices at Ferguson Marine will have the opportunity to learn both inside and outside of the classroom, with hands-on training that provides invaluable learning opportunities.

The recruitment drive is part of the yard’s annual apprentice intake and its ongoing commitment to emerging talent in the industry.
Frances Rice, Apprentice Coordinator at Ferguson Marine, said: “People are at the heart of everything we do, and investing in the next generation is really important to us.”

Former apprentice Beth Atkinson qualified as a welder last year. She has completed two SVQs and gained an NC since starting her apprenticeship at Ferguson Marine. Now working towards her HNC, she said: “I have liked being able to combine practical skills with theoretical knowledge. During my time at the shipyard, I have worked in a variety of environments including the module halls and on the vessels. Working alongside experienced colleagues has given me the opportunity to gain knowledge and skills within my trade and develop my communication and teamwork skills.”

First-year apprentice Scott Greene said working with the team at Ferguson Marine has provided him with vital learning experiences.

He said: “During my apprenticeship with Ferguson Marine, I have improved my confidence a lot by interacting with different people in different situations. Working as part of a team has been a vital part of my apprenticeship.

“I’ve been working with tradesmen in the shipyard, helping them complete jobs by setting up the work area and building my understanding on how to work safely and efficiently in a shipyard environment. Learning to function as a team allows us to tackle intricate tasks more effectively, contributing to the success of the project.”
