Drivers are being warned to expect months of disruption on the M8 as major bridge refurbishment works get underway at the Hillington Interchange.
The £10 million project, managed by Amey on behalf of Transport Scotland, will see four bridges at Junction 26 undergo essential repairs including new waterproofing, safety barrier upgrades, resurfacing and parapet improvements.
Work started on Monday 8th September and is being carried out in five phases, with the scheme expected to continue until spring 2026.
As part of the first phase, lane closures have already been put in place on the eastbound carriageway and the Junction 26 eastbound on-slip is closed until early October. Overnight closures are also in force on the Junction 25A westbound off-slip, between 8pm and 6am, with traffic being diverted to exit at Junction 26 instead.
A 40mph speed limit and average speed cameras have been introduced through the works area.
Transport Scotland has warned that the M8 – which carries around 150,000 vehicles every day – will be heavily affected, with significant delays expected at peak times. Diversions are signposted but drivers are being advised to plan ahead and allow extra time for journeys.
The project will pause during the festive period, but further phases will mean more lane closures and slip road restrictions in both directions as the work progresses into 2026.
A Transport Scotland spokesperson said the refurbishment is vital to ensure the long-term safety and reliability of one of Scotland’s busiest motorway junctions.
