A convicted thug has been found guilty of killing a man in a brutal knife attack.

Derek Docherty stabbed Sean Dock at a flat in Renfrew on 13th May, 2023.

The 36-year-old later tried to stop police entering the property and cleaned the knife used in the attack.

Mr Dock, 35, tragically died from the wound.

Docherty had denied murder during a trial at the High Court in Glasgow, but was today found guilty of the lesser charge of culpable homicide.

After the verdict, prosecutor Scott McKenzie revealed that Docherty already had a lengthy criminal record, including two previous High Court convictions for aggravated assault. He had also been convicted of weapons offences and drug trafficking.

Docherty was awaiting sentence at the time for having a mobile phone in prison when he attacked Mr Dock.

He had his remand in custody continued as Lord Mulholland adjourned sentencing until November 20 at the High Court in Edinburgh.

The judge told him: “You killed a man by stabbing him through the chest, which is an unsurvivable injury. He effectively bled to death in a short period of time.

“Given your criminal record and what you have been convicted of, there will be a custodial sentence coming your way.”

Mr Dock is survived by his mother and brother.

Mr McKenzie said the victim’s mother had stated: “I feel hollow since the incident and I find it difficult to put the loss into words.”
