Original article: Council reveals options for multi-million-pound investment in Johnstone and Trinity schools
Renfrewshire News breaks down yesterday’s announcement from Renfrewshire Council and what it may mean for pupils, parents, and staff across Johnstone’s schools.
The council revealed new details of its £170 million investment in education, outlining how the next phase of the programme will shape the future of Johnstone High School and the town’s seven primary schools.
Under the plans, three main options are being developed for Johnstone High School — refurbishing the current building, building a new school on the same site, or constructing a new school elsewhere in the town. All three options will be fully explored before a final decision is made.
The town’s primary schools are also set for a major review. With pupil numbers expected to fall sharply over the next decade, the council has confirmed that the seven existing schools are operating at only 68 per cent capacity.
Three of the schools — Auchenlodment, St Margaret’s, and Thorn — are older and in need of investment, while the others are modern but not being used to their full potential. As part of the redesign, the council will consider creating a new primary school that could bring together more than one existing school.
For example, one possible option could see a new Johnstone Primary School built to replace Auchenlodment, St Margaret’s, and Thorn, rather than maintaining separate buildings.
Council officials say the aim is to ensure all pupils in Johnstone are taught in high-quality, modern buildings that reflect the needs of the community and provide value for money.
Shortlists of specific options for both the high school and primary estates will be drawn up by early 2026, with preferred plans for each area expected by early 2027. However, if new projects are approved, it could be 2030 or later before any new buildings are complete.
Engagement with local school communities has already begun, with meetings held with parent council representatives and surveys issued to parents and staff. Statutory consultations will follow before any final decisions are made.
The council has stressed that all existing buildings will continue to be maintained for current pupils while the long-term plans are developed.
