Residents living in the Howwood Road area of Johnstone are being invited to a drop-in information event to learn more about regeneration and investment plans for their community.
The event takes place on Wednesday, 29th October 2025, from 5pm to 7pm at Thorn Athletic Sports Academy, Thomas Shanks Park, Greenend Avenue, Johnstone.
The session is part of Renfrewshire Council’s wider housing-led regeneration and renewal programme, which covers eight areas across Renfrewshire. Howwood Road is one of these key areas, with plans for new Council housing, improvements to existing homes, and environmental works.
Council officers will be on hand at the event to answer questions about the external improvement works, landscaping, designs, costs, and consultation process. The event will also showcase proposals for the former St David’s school site and invite feedback from local residents.
New Council homes will be built in two phases. The first phase includes 70 new homes on the former Cochrane Castle Primary School site and nearby grassed area off Highcraig Avenue. These will include a mix of 2, 3, 4 and 5-bedroom homes, cottage flats, and bungalows — all energy efficient and many designed for wheelchair access.
The second phase of new housing will follow on the cleared site between Craigbog and Highcraig Avenues once demolition is complete.
Improvements are also planned for around 196 existing homes, including new roofs, gutters, rainwater pipes, solar panels, external wall insulation, balcony refurbishments, and upgraded garden and recycling areas.
Demolition will take place in stages, starting in 2026, with further phases in 2029, while outside improvement works begin early in 2026. The entire regeneration project is expected to be completed by 2031.
The Council’s housing teams will support tenants, residents, and owners throughout the process, including assistance with rehousing, ownership discussions, and funding options.
