Johnstone is hosting its Christmas Lights Switch-On today, with events and entertainment taking place in the town centre throughout the afternoon.

Live performances are running on the bandstand from early afternoon until the lights are switched on at 5pm. A funfair is operating in Houstoun Square, Santa’s Grotto is open until later this afternoon, and visitors can also enjoy the St Vincent’s Hospice Christmas Market, a giant inflatable snow globe for photos, and festive walkabout acts.

The Christmas lights will be switched on at 5pm by Provost Lorraine Cameron, Santa and Jenna from Wallace Primary School. Jenna is one of five winners in the Provost’s annual Christmas Card competition, in which local school pupils design the cards used for the festive season.

Residents are being encouraged to support local businesses during the festive period, with around 70p from every pound spent locally staying within the community.

For anyone unable to attend in person, Johnstone Sound is broadcasting live from the event, and listeners can tune in through the station’s mobile app.

Today’s stage, hosted by John O & Robert Holt, the programme includes performances from Dream Believe Achieve Academy, RockUs Community Choir, Dans-Scene Studios, Steven Caldwell & Band, Ella Monaghan, Francis Bondd (Mr Commando), The Fogarty’s and Whyte Noise. The build-up to the switch-on moment will begin shortly before 5pm.
