People in Renfrewshire are being encouraged to kick-start the New Year by signing up for Race for Life in Glasgow, with fundraising events taking place across the city later this spring and summer.
TV personality Leanne Quigley is backing the campaign and urging people of all ages and abilities to take part, as communities across the UK come together to raise money for life-saving research.
The events, organised by Cancer Research UK, run from May to July. Anyone who signs up during January can receive 30 per cent off their entry fee by using the code RFL26NY.
In Scotland alone, around 36,700 people are diagnosed with cancer each year. Money raised through Race for Life helps fund research into preventing, detecting and treating the disease, with the aim of helping more people live longer, healthier lives.
Entries are now open for the 3k, 5k and 10k races, which will take place at Glasgow Green on Sunday 17th May. Participants can walk, jog or run the course at their own pace, making the events accessible to everyone.
Those looking for a tougher challenge can also sign up for Pretty Muddy, a 5k obstacle course event at Strathclyde Park in Motherwell on Saturday 13th June. Pretty Muddy Kids is open to children aged six to 12 who are over 1.2 metres tall, starting at 10am, followed by the adult and teen event from 11am.
Leanne previously took part in Race for Life alongside her fiancé Sophie Jones after Sophie was diagnosed with breast cancer in July 2024. The couple led a team that raised more than £1,200 at a Pretty Muddy event last summer, marking the end of Sophie’s treatment. She is now in remission after undergoing chemotherapy and radiotherapy for HER2 positive breast cancer.
Research funded by Cancer Research UK played a key role in developing Herceptin, one of the treatments Sophie received, which is now considered the gold standard of care for this type of breast cancer.
Race for Life raises millions of pounds each year to support research breakthroughs. Since the event began in 1994, more than 10 million people have taken part, helping to fund decades of progress in cancer treatment and survival.
Over the past 50 years, research supported by Cancer Research UK has helped nearly double breast cancer survival rates in the UK and has contributed to major discoveries, including proving the link between smoking and cancer.
