A refreshed carers strategy is set to go out to public consultation after health and social care leaders warned that thousands of unpaid carers in Renfrewshire remain unidentified.

The issue was discussed at a meeting of the Renfrewshire Health and Social Care Integration Joint Board on Friday, 30th January 2026, held in the Council Chambers.

Board members were told that while an estimated 19,000 unpaid carers live in Renfrewshire, many do not identify themselves as carers and only seek help when they reach crisis point.

The updated strategy aims to improve early identification of carers, strengthen access to support, and better recognise carers as “care partners” rather than informal helpers.

Members heard that forthcoming national changes will place greater emphasis on carers’ rights, including clearer expectations around access to breaks from caring responsibilities.

The board agreed to move forward with a public consultation on the revised strategy, which will run during February and March, allowing carers and families to help shape future support.

Board members stressed that improving support for carers is critical not only for their own wellbeing, but also for the sustainability of health and social care services across Renfrewshire, as unpaid carers continue to play a vital role in supporting people to live independently at home.
