More than seven million people started a new job in 2025, according to new figures released by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC).
The figures were published during National Careers Week, which runs from 2nd March to 7th March 2026.
HMRC said the total represents an increase of 300,000 people compared with the previous year.
The spring months were the busiest time for new recruits. More than 1.8 million people began new roles between April and June 2025.
The tax authority is encouraging jobseekers to download the HMRC app, which provides access to key employment and tax information needed when starting a job.
The app allows users to view details such as their National Insurance number, tax code, employment history and PAYE records.
Myrtle Lloyd, HMRC’s Chief Customer Officer, said the app can help people manage the paperwork involved in starting a new role.
“Applying for a job or starting a new job can be hard work in itself,” she said.
“But the HMRC app provides you with handy access to everything you need to make the admin side of things a little easier – especially important for young people who may not know what information an employer requires.
“Download the HMRC app to save yourself some time and stress and avoid those first day jitters.”
The HMRC app gained more than 2.7 million new users in 2025.
Popular features include accessing PAYE employment records, using a tax calculator to estimate salary deductions and storing a National Insurance number in a digital phone wallet.
