Rail passengers from Renfrewshire and across the west of Scotland face continued disruption after it was confirmed the main concourse at Glasgow Central Station will remain closed until next week.
Network Rail said Glasgow Central’s Low Level station will reopen on Wednesday morning, allowing services on the underground lines through the city to resume.
However, the High Level station, which handles long-distance and most regional services, will stay closed while safety checks continue following the fire at the Union Corner building on Union Street.
The fire broke out on Sunday afternoon and later caused part of the building to collapse, leading to the immediate closure of the station as emergency services responded.
Following a full site assessment, engineers said the façade of the building on Gordon Street remains unstable and further work is required before trains can safely return to the main station.
Network Rail said it must wait for Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and Glasgow City Council to complete critical safety work at the site before railway engineers can carry out structural inspections of the station.
Ross Moran, Network Rail’s Route Director for Scotland, said: “We are grateful to Scottish Fire and Rescue teams who have been working tirelessly to contain the fire on the Union Corner site.Glasgow Central high level station to remain closed until next week after Union Street fire
“I am pleased to advise passengers that we will be able to open Glasgow Central Low Level station from tomorrow morning (Wednesday).
“Unfortunately, further work is required to ensure the high level station is safe for trains to operate. Our priority is to make sure that we can reopen Glasgow Central as soon as it is safe to do so and we will continue to work with emergency services, the local council and our train operators to restore services.
“We want to reassure passengers that we are doing everything we can to open the high level station, but we must enable the emergency services and Glasgow City Council to complete their critical work to secure the Union Corner site and make it safe.”
Glasgow Central is one of the busiest railway stations in the UK, with around 25 million passenger visits each year.
The station is the main hub for services on the West Coast Main Line to England, as well as trains across much of central Scotland.
Passengers are being advised to continue following travel updates from their train operators while disruption remains in place.
