Hopes of easing cost of living pressures for households in Renfrewshire have been thrown into uncertainty due to global events, councillors have been told.

An update to the Fairer Renfrewshire sub-committee revealed that while inflation and energy costs had been expected to fall, new international developments are likely to reverse that trend.

Officials said there had been “positive green shoots” earlier in the year, including falling inflation and expectations of lower interest rates and reduced energy bills.

However, the ongoing conflict in the Middle East is now creating uncertainty in financial and energy markets, with early impacts already being felt.

This includes rising fuel prices at petrol stations and concerns about future increases in household energy costs.

The report warned that markets remain volatile, with financial products such as mortgages and savings deals being withdrawn or changing rapidly.

Councillors were told this could have a direct impact on households, particularly those already struggling with bills.

Local data also shows continued pressure on essentials, with rising food costs and fuel poverty highlighted as key concerns.

Advice services reported increasing numbers of residents struggling to top up energy meters, with deductions for arrears leaving households without enough credit.

There are also signs of changing behaviour, with some households cutting back on essentials, including healthy food.

One councillor highlighted concern that people in Scotland are eating fewer portions of fruit and vegetables compared to the rest of the UK.

Officials said the council is working with partners through initiatives such as the Fair Food Network to promote access to affordable, healthy food.

Councillors were told the situation will continue to be closely monitored, with the council prepared to respond to any new support measures introduced by national government.
