Author and principal engineer Brian Young will explore why the Romans undertook three campaigns into Scotland at a free public event in Paisley.
He will speak at Paisley and District u3a’s monthly meeting on Thursday, 8th October 2026 at 2pm in the Salvation Army Hall, Mill Street.
The talk opens the group’s new session. Refreshments will be available from 1.30pm.
u3a chair Kathy O’Donnell said: “Given that Scotland is over 2,000 miles from the centre of Rome, there had to be a pressing reason to send legions of troops so far. We are keen to learn if the Romans ever conquered the tribes here? Brian will explore the historical events which led to these three campaigns.”
Brian has a special interest in the Roman period. His first published book was about the missing 9th legion. His second, more recent book is about Hadrian’s Wall.
He said: “It’s a fascinating talk about why and how the Romans achieved their goal to rule the known world.”
Paisley and District u3a is run by volunteers who share their knowledge and skills. Anyone who is no longer in full-time work can join.
Kathy added: “We are very excited about this new session. u3as are sociable, self-learning communities run entirely by volunteers. It’s a great way to keep our brains active. Anyone not in full time work can join. Our current members will be able to renew their annual fees on 8 October. Plus, there’s a special warm welcome to any individuals signing up to try new things with our u3a.”
