A Renfrewshire health service that delivers hospital-level care in patients’ own homes has already saved more than 700 hospital bed days, Renfrewshire IJB members have been told.

The Hospital at Home service was highlighted during a meeting of the Renfrewshire Health and Social Care Integration Joint Board on Friday, 30th January 2026, held between 10am and 12 noon in the Council Chambers.

Board members heard that the service has supported 114 patients since launching in May last year, allowing people to receive intensive medical treatment at home rather than being admitted to hospital.

The service focuses largely on older and frail patients and provides short-term care for conditions such as infections, falls and heart failure – illnesses that would traditionally require a hospital stay.

A patient experience video was shown to members during the meeting, illustrating how the service helps people remain in familiar surroundings while still receiving hospital-level care.

Officials confirmed the service is now set to expand, with capacity expected to increase to 18 beds across Renfrewshire and the Levern Valley in East Renfrewshire within the next six months as demand continues to rise and pressure on hospital wards remains high.

Health bosses told the board that the approach improves patient dignity and outcomes while also easing strain on acute hospitals by freeing up beds for those who need them most.

Members agreed the Hospital at Home model reflects the direction future health and social care services need to take, with greater emphasis on community-based care and reducing avoidable hospital admissions as demand continues to grow across Renfrewshire.
