A Linwood Asda worker had a shift to remember after her long-term partner surprised her with a marriage proposal while she was working at the store’s self-checkouts.

Tracey Henderson, 58, was carrying out her shift at Asda Linwood when partner Gordon Hyndman suddenly appeared with an engagement ring and asked her to marry him in front of customers and colleagues.

The couple have been together for 19 years.

Tracey, who has worked at the store for four years, said she was left completely stunned by the proposal.

She said: “I wasn’t expecting it at all. I was totally gobsmacked to be honest.

“We’d not talked about getting married, so it was a huge surprise.

“I thought he was bringing me my car keys and then he got a ring out of his pocket and proposed.”

Customers using the self-checkouts quickly realised what was happening and joined staff in congratulating the couple.

Tracey said: “All the customers who were at self-checkouts at the time were all congratulating me, and the colleagues loved it too.

“Gordon had been to the customer service desk first and asked one of my colleagues, Douglas Wilson, to video the moment he proposed.”

The couple have four grown-up children between them as well as four grandsons, who Tracey says are “all over the moon” with the engagement.

Gordon, 64, works as a mechanic and first met Tracey after she brought her car to him for repairs.

Explaining why he decided to pop the question, he said: “Tracey’s a very, very, very thoughtful and kind person and I can’t imagine my life without her.

“I didn’t go down on one knee though as I might not have got up again!”

The couple have not yet decided on a wedding date or venue, although Tracey said some of her Asda friends will definitely be invited to celebrate with them.

Claire Mackie, community champion at Asda Linwood, said the proposal had brought a real buzz around the store.

She said: “It was just brilliant. They are a lovely couple and we are so, so pleased for them.

“Everyone here at Asda Linwood would like to say a massive congratulations to them both and wish them all the best for the future.

“It’s definitely one shift that Tracey won’t forget in a hurry.

“We’d like to thank them for allowing us to be a part of such a special moment.”
