Thousands of runners took to the streets of Paisley for this year’s Paisley 10k and Fun Run, with 3,500 people taking part across the two events.
Paisley’s Craig Ferguson started the 10k before joining the runners himself. He was invited to start the race after walking 3,100 miles across the United States in a kilt to raise money for SAMH (Scottish Action for Mental Health).
Posting on Facebook afterwards, Craig said: “Always proud to be a Paisley Buddie.
“Such an honour to start and then race in the Paisley 10k, one of our town’s biggest events. To be at the centre of the start of the race alongside other incredible runners was a great experience.
“The race itself was surprisingly enjoyable, given the fact I haven’t run since pre-America. So, to walk away with a 48:32 time was better than expected.
“Well done to everyone who took part. It was great to see so many faces.”
Ross Horgan, of Bellahouston Road Runners, won the men’s 10k in a net time of 31 minutes and 36 seconds.
Ethan Carolan, of Giffnock North AAC, finished second in 31:43, with Kilbarchan AAC’s Ewan McKerral third in 31:53.
Anya MacLean, of Garscube Harriers, won the women’s race in 33:55. Yvonne McNairn, of Giffnock North AAC, was second in 35:31 and Nynke Mulholland, of Inverclyde AC, was third in 36:07.
In the Fun Run, Blair Wright, of Gleniffer Thistle, won the male race in 9:58.
Lewis Leavy, of Renfrew FC Youth 2011 White, was second in 9:59, with Murray Graham, of North Ayrshire Athletics, third in 10:18.
Kilbarchan AAC’s Skye Williams won the female Fun Run in 10:44. Her clubmate Kira Mitchell was second in 10:51 and Anna Hill, of Giffnock North AAC, finished third in 11:02.
Former Scotland professional basketball player and OneRen board member Kieron Achara MBE started the Fun Run.
Councillor Lisa-Marie Hughes, Chair of OneRen, said: “The Paisley 10k and Fun Run was once again one of our region’s best days of the year.
“Seeing the streets of Paisley packed with runners and supporters cheering them is always a marvellous sight.
“There’s something incredibly special about seeing people enjoy themselves and achieve great personal goals by taking part.
“It was also fantastic to recognise the achievements of Craig Ferguson as one of our own for his fantastic feat in the USA this summer.
“We’re so proud of him, along with everyone who took part – and thankful, of course, to our event organising team, sponsors and supporters. We can’t wait to do it all again next year.”
The race route also included Museum Mile, where spectators heard facts about objects and collections due to feature when Paisley Museum reopens later this year.
Prizes were presented by Commonwealth karate champion Amy Connell.
The Paisley 10k and Fun Run is organised by OneRen, supported by Renfrewshire Council and Kilbarchan AAC. This year’s event was sponsored by Specsavers Paisley.
