Maintenance and operating costs for the Renfrew Bridge are forecast to run £105,000 over budget this financial year.
The figure was included in a budget monitoring report considered by Renfrewshire Council’s Infrastructure, Land and Environment Policy Board on Wednesday 26th August.
The report said operational and maintenance costs were higher than originally forecast.
Councillor Chris Gilmour questioned the additional expense and asked whether it related to repairs on the new bridge.
Council officer Gerard Hannah told the board that the higher costs included software maintenance and the ongoing requirements of operating a structure of its size.
He said: “To clarify, these are not repairs as such. It is more the on-going maintenance requirements of a structure of that size that is required for its on-going continuation. There is nothing there that we are not aware of or were not expecting.”
The council is reviewing ways to reduce the cost.
One area being examined is a standby boatmen service needed when large vessels use the lay-by berth.
Mr Hannah said: “We have had that standby service in place for the past year, but we have not utilised it once.”
The board was told that changing the requirement could potentially reduce costs.
The bridge overspend contributes to a projected £150,000 overall revenue overspend across services covered by the board during 2026/27.
