Hundreds of residents enjoyed getting up close to vintage vehicles when the ever-popular Fire Engine Rally rolled into Johnstone at the weekend.

Big crowds descended on Houstoun Square for a full afternoon of family fun as emergency vehicles old and new gathered in the town centre.

This was the second time the annual Renfrewshire Council-run event has taken place in Johnstone – having moved from its previous home in Paisley in 2014.

Visitors young and old had the chance to see machines lovingly kept alive by the Scottish Fire and Rescue Heritage Trust.

The day began with a parade of fire engines from Johnstone Fire Station, down Thorn Brae, to Houstoun Square.

Attractions on in the town centre during the day included birds of prey, a bouncy castle and a selection of stalls.

Local firefighters were hand to demonstrate fire safety, including showing people what the impact can be of a chip pan bursts into flames.

And Renfrewshire’s Provost Anne Hall got in on the action when firefighters showed off their skills to the crowd by cutting her out of a car.

Provost Hall said: “Once again, it was an absolute pleasure to get out and about at the Fire Engine Rally, which is always a really popular event.

“By holding these events in the town centre we are bringing business in for local traders.

“There was a serious safety message on the day as it was a chance for the fire service to meet the public and explain a bit more about the work they do.

“My thanks go to them for helping make the day such a success.”
