A total of 235 unwanted air weapons were handed in to Police in Renfrewshire since the beginning of Police Scotland’s surrender campaign which commenced on 23th May 2016.
The amnesty has now ended but the Air Weapon and Licensing (Scotland) Act 2015 will make it illegal to possess airguns without a licence and will be brought in on 31st December 2016.
There will be a new air weapons certificate application form launched on 1st July.
Chief Inspector Alison Kennedy, Area Commander for Paisley said: “Renfrewshire Police has had an excellent response with over 200 air weapons surrendered and I’d like to thank everyone in Renfrewshire that has given up weapons they no longer wish to keep or licence.
“Remember – anyone wishing to retain an air weapon after 31st December 2016 is required to apply for a licence, or face prosecution with penalties of a fine or up to two years imprisonment.”
