Gavin Newlands, MP for Paisley and Renfrewshire North, has urged for more action to be taken to help eliminate homophobia in football.
A recent report by BBC 5 Live highlighted how 50% of football fans have heard homophobic chanting whilst at the football, with 71% of respondents also stating that football authorities should do more to educate fans on homophobia.
As well as raising this issue with the Leader of the House at the UK Parliament, Mr Newlands has also written to the UK Government and the SFA to find out what they are doing to help eliminate homophobia from football.
Gavin Newlands, MP for Paisley and Renfrewshire North, said: “The results of this recent survey which show that 50% of football fans have experienced or heard some form of homophobic chanting whilst at the football is deeply worrying.
“We have come a long way in helping to create an inclusive society but this study shows that some fans still live in the dark ages. These homophobic chants are only not welcome at the football, they are also not wanted anywhere in society.
“This study also shows that over 70% of respondents want more work to be done to help educate fans about homophobia. That’s why I’ve contacted the UK Government and the SFA to find out what they’re doing in response to this study.
“Football is our national game and everyone should feel comfortable about going to watch their team without hearing bigoted and homophobic chanting. The quicker that we rid these appalling views from football, the better it will be for all fans.”
