A group looking to save part of Johnstone history will hold another meeting next week.
The group, which is hoping to acquire and develop the old school building on Beith Rd, will meet in Johnstone Town Hall at 6pm on Wednesday 6th September.
Cllr Andy Steel, who has been helping with the group, is keen for as many local people as possible get behind the idea.
He said: “An idea like this can only work if there’s community support, so hopefully enough people want to see our town’s history in bricks and mortar saved for the future.”
The building has been used until recently to store Renfrewshire Council’s Christmas lights but is now empty.
Initial suggestions are that the council will be happy to explore working with any community group which has ideas for the building.
Andy continued: “If the building can be rescued and renovated, there’s no limit to the uses it could have in the community. It could be used for history groups, school visits, maybe even as a polling station which could save schools being closed whenever there’s a vote – the possibilities are endless.
“There will be staff from Engage Renfrewshire on hand to offer advice on applying for funding, constituting an official body and so on, so whether you fancy simply giving your support or would like to get more formally involved as a committee member, please come along if you can.”
The initial meeting of the group was held last month and, if there is enough interest, it is anticipated monthly or bi-monthly meetings would be held in the future.
