A moth-recording evening at Jenny’s Well Local Nature Reserve in Paisley recorded 143 moths from 46 different species.
The event was held on Friday 17th July 2026 and was led by Gordon Phillips and hosted by Friends of Jenny’s Well.
Gordon and local moth experts Paul Tatner and Paul Mapplebeck set up traps at several locations around the ponds area of the reserve from 9.30pm.
Once it became dark, those taking part caught, identified and recorded moths flying around the traps.
A white sheet was placed beneath one trap to make it easier to collect moths using sample tubs. Nets and bright torches were also used to find moths in different parts of the reserve.
The moths recorded included the Dun-bar, Shaded Broad-bar, Small Fan-footed Wave, Brimstone Moth, Mother of Pearl, Oak Longhorn and Dotted Carpet.
The Dun-bar was the most common species found, followed by the Shaded Broad-bar and Small Fan-footed Wave.
The event ended at 1am. The moths which had been identified were released, while those needing further study were taken away for identification.
