Renfrew FC’s Walking Football group celebrated its fifth birthday with a visit from Provost Lorraine Cameron at New Western Park on Wednesday 7th October.
The group has grown from a small gathering to more than 60 registered members. Between 30 and 40 players attend its weekly sessions.
During her visit, Provost Cameron spoke with members about what the group meant to them. They described how it helps them get out in the fresh air, keep fit as they get older and build friendships.
The sessions also give members time to enjoy a chat over a cuppa and a biscuit after playing.
Three original members, Brian, Ally and Graham, received small commemorative awards from Provost Cameron. She was then presented with a pennant and a Renfrew FC polo shirt as thanks for attending.
After the football, members enjoyed their usual biscuits alongside cakes baked by the mum of Callum, the group’s youngest member.
The group also thanked Alan Kelly, Murray Morton, Hedley McNish and Tom Johnston, who organise the weekly sessions and several nights out throughout the year.
Organisers said the four had created a welcoming, safe space and were appreciated by all the members.
