Meeting next Tuesday in Paisley
The 1820 general strike by Paisley textile workers will be discssed at a meeting sponsored by Paisley Trades Union Council on Tuesday 3 December in the Methodist Hall, 2 Gauze Street, Paisley starting at 7 p.m. . Speaking will be the chair of the Trades Union Council Colin Mack and Vince Mills, Honorary Research Fellow at Glasgow Caledonian University and most recent author of the Luath Press publication Keith Hardie and Socialism.
The 1820 strike was part of the continuing movement for the right to vote following the Peterloo Massacre in 1819. Paisley was then Scotland’s biggest industrial town and its cotton industry was the main base for a strike intended as part of a wider movement to secure ballot. In Paisley upwards of tne thousand went on strike and several workers were shot dead by troops. Several arerested were tried for treason. ‘The meeting’, says Colin Mack, ‘ will pay tribute to those who fought for the freedoms we still enjoy today and will exercise on 12 December,’
