Nearly 70 years ago The Avon Valley Motor Cycle Club was formed by ex-service personnel with the aim of creating a better social spirit among motor-cyclists.
This aim was clearly outlined in the clubs 1949 constitution, as was one other stipulation – that if the club ever disbanded in the future, any remaining money was to be donated to Erskine Hospital.
Fast forward to 2016, a special year for veterans’ charity Erskine founded in 1916, and the charity has benefitted to the tune of £28,952 due to the founders of the Motor Cycle Club and the most generous clause in their constitution.
After lengthy discussions the existing members of the club agreed with sadness that there was no alternative but to disband the club largely due to decreasing membership. The club also had premises which in later years became a burden with annual maintenance costs far exceeding the income generated.
So the end of an era for Avon Valley Motor Cycle Club will make a significant difference to the veterans in Erskine with the plan being to spend the donation on a minivan which costs £28,000.
Six of the last remaining members of the club visited The Erskine Home to hand over a cheque to Erskine Chairman Andrew Robertson. They also received a tour of the home and to the delight of residents brought with them two motorbikes including a 1966 red BSA which created much interest.
Erskine Chairman Andrew Robertson said: “It was so thoughtful of the forbearers of Avon Valley Motor Cycle Club to put a clause in their constitution which would benefit Erskine. The need for Erskine to care for veterans remains the same today as it has throughout our 100 year history. We are hugely appreciated of this incredibly kind donation and it seems fitting that we intend to spend the money on another form or motor vehicle, which we don’t currently have, and will be of great benefit to our residents.”
Dougie Meek, who was Secretary/Treasurer of the Club said: “The club had run its course and through agreement with the remaining members was wound up. We were happy we were able to donate to such a worthwhile cause. Our visit to The Erskine Home was enjoyed by us all and we welcomed our newest honorary member, Erskine resident Jimmy, to Avon Valley MCC – the star of the show! All club members are looking forward to a return visit in the near future.”
