Gavin Newlands, SNP candidate for Paisley and Renfrewshire North, has urged young people to back the SNP to champion their interests at Westminster – as he highlights statistics showing that younger generations are being fundamentally let down by the Tory government.Research by the IFS shows that, under the Tories, young adults are poorer than their predecessors – and three million working households including low-income young people can expect to be worse off because of planned Tory cuts to social security.
By the time they reach their early thirties, the wealth accumulated by young people born in the 1980s is half that of those born in the 1970s.
Commenting, Gavin Newlands, SNP Candidate for Paisley and Renfrewshire North, said: “These figures expose the real cost of voting Tory at this election. The Tories found money in their budget to cut taxes for the richest, but it seems that young people are paying the price for this.
“Cuts to housing benefit for 18-21 year olds, family cap on child tax credits and lack of affordable housing are just some of the Tory policies which are hurting children and young people – with those on low incomes held back even more by attacks on the very support that can help them get started in life.
“Theresa May has confirmed the real cost of voting for her, with continued austerity which will hit young adults especially hard.
“While Tories are cutting from the young, the SNP promise to keep Theresa May in check and make the voice of Scotland’s young people heard in Westminster.
