Pupils at Linwood High School have won £3,000 for local charity St Vincent’s Hospice through a competition organised by the Youth and Philanthropy Initiative (YPI) Scotland.
Linwood High School pupils Amy Reid, Abbie-Louise McKinnon, Laura McMullan, Louise Taney and Angela Muir all made an incredible effort in the competition, researching the work that St Vincent’s Hospice carries out and raising awareness of the charity within the school.
YPI is an active citizenship programme that raises awareness among young people about philanthropy and their local community. Each participating school is responsible each year for directing a £3,000 YPI grant to a local charity through a unique programme of teamwork, research and competition.
YPI Scotland is all about creativity and passion, leaving the four walls of the classroom behind and supporting the issues young people care most about.
Alison Burton from St Vincent’s Hospice Children & Young Person’s Service and Laura McDade from the fundraising team were with the girls every step of the way.
Abbie-Louise McKinnon and Laura McMullan said: “We feel St Vincent’s Hospice is an important charity and in particular wanted to help the children and young people there with new Lego kits and updating the library. We worked hard and were proud that we won on behalf of St Vincent’s Hospice.”
Alistair Wright, who headed the YPI for the school, said: “The girls put in a lot of hard work and effort into researching St Vincent’s Hospice and raising awareness for the charity within the school. They all showed great enthusiasm to make contact with St Vincent’s and produced a well thought out presentation that was a worthy winner at our YPI final.
“I was delighted for them and St Vincent’s Hospice who were very supportive of the girls throughout.”
Alison Burton from St Vincent’s Hospice said: “Winning £3000 for the CYP service is amazing. The girls put so much work into their fantastic presentation, their passion shone through which inspired many people in the crowd.
“The money will go towards helping children and young people throughout the community who need support when a special person in their life is terminally ill or who has died. It will help by us buy new resources and support some staffing costs in order to develop the service further. Thank you so much Linwood High School.”
