As part of the Scottish Mental Health Arts and Film Festival 2017, generously supported by Paisley2021 and as part of the wider Nouveau Arts Experience ‘St Matthew’s Presents’, ‘Silent Night Competition’ is an exciting new project that invites film makers to ‘reclaim’ the art of Silent Film .
A silent film is a film with no synchronised recorded sound, no spoken dialogue, and is generally accompanied by live music. The silent film era lasted from 1895 to 1936, and it is believed around 70% of Silent Films have been lost since this time.
Donald MacKenzie, an experienced musician and house organist for the Odeon, Leicester Square, will score and improvise live musical accompaniment to all films submitted and a panel of specialist judges will curate and present a cash prize of £250 , sponsored by Penny Lane Homes, to the winning entry. St Matthew’s encourages every community, school, organisation and individual in Paisley and beyond to take part in this unmissable competition. The competition will also incorporate a screening of feature silent film ‘The General’ starring Buster Keaton.
Submissions should be completed by the extended deadline of 11 October, and the official screening shall take place on 19 October based at St Matthew’s, Gordon Street, Paisley, PA1 1XL.
